Nine positions
The defending team fields 9 players. Each has a specific spot and role:
The battery
- Pitcher (1) — throws the ball from the mound toward the batter. Sets the tempo and chooses pitch types.
- Catcher (2) — squats behind home plate, receives pitches, and directs the defence. Often called the "field general".
Infield
- First baseman (3) — guards first base and catches throws from teammates to retire runners.
- Second baseman (4) — covers the area between first and second base.
- Shortstop (6) — stands between second and third base — often the most agile player on the team.
- Third baseman (5) — defends the "hot corner" at third base where balls arrive fast.
Outfield
- Left fielder (7) — left field.
- Center fielder (8) — center field, the widest range.
- Right fielder (9) — right field.
Outfielders catch balls that fly over the infield and throw them back to the infielders.
How does the defence work together?
The key is communication. Players call who catches the ball, who covers which base, and who handles the cut-off throw. We drill these situations at practice so the team works as one in games.
