At its centre lies the \u003Cstrong>diamond\u003C/strong> — a square with bases at the corners:\u003C/p>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Home plate\u003C/strong> — where the batter stands and where runs are scored.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>1st, 2nd, 3rd base\u003C/strong> — the bases a runner must circle in order.\u003C/li>\u003C/ul>\u003Cp>Inside the diamond sits the \u003Cstrong>pitcher's mound\u003C/strong>, and beyond the diamond stretches the outfield.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>The inning — the basic unit\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>A game has \u003Cstrong>9 innings\u003C/strong> (youth baseball usually plays 5–6). Each inning has two halves: the visitors bat first, then the home team.
