A hall can't replace a full field, but it lets you work calmly on what there isn't time for during the season: stance, coordination, footwork and repeating the same movement.

At Goats Poznań the indoor season means Mondays and Wednesdays at SP No. 45, 3 Harcerska Street: children train from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., adults from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. We don't treat it as waiting for spring. We treat it as building a base, so that going back onto the grass is safer.

Throwing: quality before distance

In a small space we work over shorter distances. What counts is foot placement, shoulder work, a steady upper body and a controlled finish to the movement. The number of throws and how hard they are has to match age, experience and current fitness.

Pain isn't part of training that you have to wait out. The shoulder and the elbow warn you long before an injury. That's why indoors we count sets, take breaks and don't copy the volume we see in videos of professionals.

Hitting and coordination

A tee, soft balls and a net let us practise the path of the swing and the moment of contact without needing a full field. Mindless repetition on its own doesn't give much. A player needs a short bit of attention, a pause, and a task at their own level.

A child with a bat that's too heavy learns the wrong mechanics. An adult chasing power loses control of the plane of the swing. It's easier to notice and fix this in the hall, before the hard match ball comes back.

Defence starts with the feet

Fielding ground balls, the first steps towards the ball and a safe body position can be practised even without a long throw. Small decision games also teach communication along the way: who takes the ball, where to throw it, and when it's better to pick the simpler option.

These are the same habits you see in the spring in cut-offs and backing up. In winter we simply have more time to name them and repeat them.

A plan for a beginner

Warm-up and mobility before throwing and swinging.

One or two technical goals per session, not twelve at once.

A gradual increase in workload, without copying what the professionals do.

Recovery, sleep and water as part of preparation, not an extra.

Why bother in winter

A winter well spent makes it easier to return to the full field in spring.
