At first: almost nothing
Most clubs — including Goats — lend gear for starter sessions. A glove, bat, and ball are waiting at the field. All your child needs on day one is sportswear and trainers with decent grip.
Baseball glove
This is the first purchase worth making after a few sessions — once your child wants to continue. A few tips:
- Size — ages 6–9: 9–10.5 inches; ages 10–13: 10.5–11.5 inches.
- Hand — left-hand glove = right-hand thrower (and vice versa). If unsure — ask the coach.
- Material — synthetic leather is lighter and cheaper. Fine for beginners.
- Budget — a decent starter glove runs €35–70.
Bat
We use club bats at practice. A personal bat is a later investment. Key points:
- Length — child stands straight, bat resting on the ground should reach the hip.
- Weight — lighter = easier swing control. Start with drop weight –10 or –12.
- Certification — check for a USA Baseball (USABat) or WBSC stamp.
Shoes
Baseball cleats are a seasonal purchase, not a day-one need. Grass-friendly trainers with good traction are enough. Avoid slippery soles.
Helmet and protection
Batting helmets are provided by the club for games and hitting drills. Catcher gear is specialist — also club-owned.
What NOT to buy right away
- Catcher's mitt — specialist and expensive.
- Equipment bag — a school backpack will do.
- Baseball pants — regular joggers are fine for training.
