It's made up of all the work that comes before: building movement and technique, learning to work as a team, and slowly getting used to game situations. The exact calendar depends on the age category, the league and the club, but the pattern is similar all over Poland: winter indoors, spring on the grass, summer for games.

Goats Poznań has worked to this rhythm since 2017. We coach children and teenagers, run open training for adults, and have a senior team in the second division of the Polish Baseball League. Not everyone who comes to a session needs to think about the league, but it's worth understanding how the year is laid out.

Winter: getting ready to play on the full field

In the colder months there's no need to wait for spring. In the hall you can work on mobility, coordination, footwork, catching and swing mechanics. Throwing is done carefully, with the load and the space under control. The aim is to have the body ready for the return to the field, not to reach maximum intensity at any price. A new person doesn't have to wait for a convenient moment. Training is split into levels of difficulty, so a beginner practises alongside more experienced players. We described what it looks like outdoors in a separate article.

The game

In a game the teams take turns to bat and to field. The number of innings, pitch limits and rotations depend on the age category and the competition rules. At the start, habits matter most: being ready before every play, making sensible decisions on the bases, and respecting opponents and umpires. If you want to understand better what you see from the stands, start with the rules of baseball.

What a parent or a first-timer can do

Don't buy specialist equipment before you've talked to the coach.

Treat the first games as learning, not as a verdict on the player's worth.

Follow the club's announcements about where sessions are, the weather and the group's rules.

Ask about the age category and how heavy the workload is before you compare your child with the senior league.

The path at Goats

A child can start with the free recreational sessions, and an adult with open training on a Monday or Wednesday. Anyone who wants to play games talks to the coach about the next step: more regular attendance, physical preparation and the calendar. The senior team is a commitment, not an automatic next stage after two training sessions.

The season in Poland is short, which is why winter matters so much: it's when you don't lose the habits you've built.
