The umpire behind home plate judges each pitch.\u003C/p>\u003Ch2>The strike zone\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>Picture a rectangle over home plate — from the batter's knees to chest. A pitch through this zone is a \u003Cstrong>strike\u003C/strong>. Outside it — a \u003Cstrong>ball\u003C/strong>.\u003C/p>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>3 strikes\u003C/strong> → the batter is out (strikeout).\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>4 balls\u003C/strong> → the batter walks to first base for free.\u003C/li>\u003C/ul>\u003Ch2>Ways to get out\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>Three outs end a half-inning. A batter can be out in several ways:\u003C/p>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Strikeout\u003C/strong> — three strikes (swings and misses, or called strikes in the zone).\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Fly out\u003C/strong> — a fielder catches the ball before it touches the ground.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Ground out\u003C/strong> — a fielder throws the ball to a base before the runner arrives.\u003C/li>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Tag out\u003C/strong> — a fielder touches the runner with the ball while off base.\u003C/li>\u003C/ul>\u003Ch2>Foul ball\u003C/h2>\u003Cp>A ball hit outside the foul lines is a \u003Cstrong>foul ball\u003C/strong>.
