All you need is a wish to learn the basics: throwing, catching, footwork and the swing. Baseball is technical, but you can build the technique bit by bit, even in your thirties, forties and beyond.

Adult sessions at Goats Poznań are open, and most people start with us from zero. We train on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the hall at Primary School No. 45 (SP nr 45), 3 Harcerska Street. The equipment is there for you.

Do you have to be in good shape?

No. Fitness comes with training, it isn't an entry requirement. Baseball is made of short, intense moments: a sprint to a base, a throw, a change of direction, and in between a moment to get set and catch your breath. It's a completely different kind of effort from running or the gym.

If you're getting back to exercise after a long break, tell the coach, along with any health problems. Sprints, throws and twisting the torso all need a proper warm-up. And pain in your shoulder, elbow or back is a sign to slow down, not something that's "just part of baseball".

What the first session looks like

We start with a warm-up and some simple ball exercises. Then, in pairs, we work on throwing and catching, a batting stance or running the bases. The coach breaks each element into small steps, so nobody lands in a fast game straight away.

If you've never thrown a ball, you start from a short distance with a soft ball. If you've played softball, baseball or something similarly throw-heavy, you get a harder task in the same drill. Nobody has to prove anything at the first sessions. The point is to get used to the movement.

Gear: don't buy blind

For a trial, comfortable sportswear, indoor shoes and water are enough. A glove and bat have to be chosen to suit your hand and the way you plan to play, so use club equipment at the start. A glove of your own only makes sense after a few sessions, once you know you're staying.

We've written up what to buy and when in our gear guide. In short: skip the cheapest "kids'" models and the most expensive catcher's gloves. At the beginning it matters more that the glove fits and closes properly than that it has a well-known brand.

Common worries

I don't know the rules. You'll pick them up as you go. Curiosity and questions are enough to start with. When you want to follow a match from the stands, have a look at the rules of baseball.

I've never thrown. We learn to throw from a short distance, without forcing the power. Legs and trunk work first, the arm comes last.

I'm afraid I won't keep up with the group. Tell the coach before the session how much experience you have, and he'll match the drill to your level.

I don't have time for a league. You don't have to. For an open session nobody asks for a match commitment.

From training to games

The best way to understand baseball is by repetition. First the individual elements, then putting them together, and finally the decisions: where to throw, when to run, when to hold back the swing. If you stay longer, you can move on to more advanced work and, in time, to competitive games.

The Goats senior team plays in the second division of the Polish Baseball League. That's a separate path, with a heavier load and a calendar of matches. If after a few weeks you feel you want more, talk to the coach.

How to join

The easiest thing is to turn up on a Monday or Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. If you'd rather let the club know first, fill in the form or write to baseball@goatspoznan.pl. Bring kit, water and a bit of patience with your own technique.
